Welcome to Geochemistry

Presented by Janet Penevolpe and Paige Prescott

This presentation presents the basics of general chemistry and geochemistry. It is important to learn the basic ways that atoms and molecules interact or do not interact, as a large part of the workshop relates to molecular reactions inside organisms. Janet and Paige begin by covering the format of the periodic table, the importance of the periodic table in chemistry, and periodic trends. They continue by explaining basic chemistry vocabulary and sub-atomic particles that comprise atoms. Afterwards they explain the basic rules of bonding, valence electrons, and lewis dot structures. Before concluding, some aspects of thermodynamics and energy are discussed. This introduction presents the basic information needed to understand the other scientists that will be speaking.
